ADHD in the era of the personal brand is wild.

You get into a thing and hyperfocus harder than anyone ever has hyperfocused. Dozens, hundreds of posts across multiple platforms. You discover things no one knows, you create many new things, you intangibly weave your very digital soul into the threads of this niche thing’s fabric. You are now known as “The Thing Guy” on several websites (despite not being a guy). People screenshot it and crosspost it to other websites, and the comments are like “OH IT’S THE THING GUY AGAIN!”

three weeks later, you drop it like a stone. You still want to do it, but you have no more motivation, and you can’t force yourself to touch it again. Your brain just goes “bored now” and moves on.

Mere months later someone goes “hey, aren’t you The Thing Guy?”. You are suddenly smoking a cigarette. You take a deep drag. “Used to be, long ago… back in March”. They look at the calendar. It’s halfway through May.

One of tbe brilliant things about mlp:fim is that the main cast aren't wayward children or highschool students they're just a bunch of young adults. Like. Twilight is a postgrad forced by her supervisor to go find friends. Apple Jack has responsibility of gaurdianship of her little sister. They're all employed. They pay rent and taxes. Fluttershy has to deal with her deadbeat underachiever older brother who can't seem to move out by himself when she visits her parents. She also has anxiety she hasnt grown out of since high school. Rainbow Dash spends most days getting high and goofing off on her minimum wage job. Pinkie Pie has a culinary apprenticeship and lives with an older couple after she left her small mining town when nobody there was as into psychadelics as her. Rarity balances running her slowly growing etsy fashion bussiness with going on tinder dates with the worst men you've ever seen. They all vote. They have to pick up their own medical perscriptions. These are 26 year old girlies going through first quarter life crisises. So, yea, that fanart of Fluttershy smoking forever weed is highly accurate.

here’s why vine was and will always be superior to tiktok you can’t really spread a lot of misinfo in 6 seconds you had to go viral on the strength of your humor and not on the allure of insane conspiracy theories or MRA talking points it’s why vines legacy will be shit like “back at it at krispy kreme” and not the downfall of democracy

la-rubinita

To be clear I am not denying that vines was superior.

But if you think tiktok is the downfall of democracy you're either not paying attention or on the WRONG side of tiktok. There are tons of people over there dedicated to making sure the masses have access to accurate information, exposing corruption, and organizing against fascism. Tiktok is not the problem. For every bad actor there's a good one and as we like to say here at the tumblr dot com: curate your experience.

Reading comprehension quiz (unit 2):

  1. Please summarize the argument of original post in your own words. Is the main point of the post about democracy, or something else? What other issues might the the author be trying to address?
  2. Define hyperbole. Why might the author deploy this rhetorical device here? What features of Tumblr may have encouraged this style of post?
  3. How can algorithms disincentivize or prevent users from fully controlling their experience on social media platforms such as TikTok? How might the architecture of these platforms —including longer-form video options — facilitate radicalization or fringe beliefs? (See Becker, A. (2021, August 24).
